Food in HangZhou

We had 3 out of the 4 famous HangZhou dishes in their "hot listed" restaurant call "Lou Wa Lou" 楼外楼. The restaurant is located on Solitary Island and has great views over the lake. It is lit up like a beacon at dusk so it cannot be missed and it's the one with the crowds of people pouring in and out all day.

They don't even accept reservation, so E and I decided to have an early dinner at 5.30pm to beat the crowd. The place was almost full when we reached there due to a wedding dinner. I think the restaurant is a little over rated, the food is by no mean fabulous but I must say the service is impeccable.

We liked the pork belly, called "Dong Po Rou" 东坡肉 yummy but sinful. The layers of fat simply melts in your mouth and the Long Jin Cha was the perfect drink to wash it all down.

Now I know why West Lake Restaurant in Singapore is so famous for their pork belly. The one we had in HangZhou is definitely the best we have tasted so far.

Beggar's Chicken (I think it's called) 叫化鸡, the chicken was wrapped in lotus leaf and cooked for several hours ... the smell of the leaf was quite strong, didn't leave much of an impression.

The last dish we tried was sweet and sour fish. 糖醋鱼 The fish was steam with sweet and sour sauce, according to the waiter, the sauce is made up of sugar and vinegar, no salt or spice. The flavors here are all mild and subtle, guess it just don't quite suit our taste buds.

The beautiful scenaries of West Lake 西湖 make up for the not so great food we had!

We did had some fabulous food the next day but I forgot to take photos due to my hunger!
